The final statement of Alexey Liptser has been published on the YouTube channel Poslednee Slovo. The text is read by photographer and author of the album This Is Navalny, Evgeny Feldman.

Alexey Yevgenyevich Liptser is a former lawyer for Alexey Navalny and one of the few attorneys who continued to defend political prisoners despite mounting pressure and personal risk. He was charged with “participation in an extremist organization” for allegedly transmitting information from Navalny to the outside world.

Liptser has consistently stated that no such organization ever existed and that the criminal case represents an attempt to dismantle independent legal defense and intimidate lawyers who continue to work professionally and in good faith. Investigators effectively reframed routine legal representation as a criminal offense.

He was sentenced to five years in a general-regime penal colony. Despite chronic illnesses and a worsening health condition, Liptser was repeatedly denied adequate medical care.

A Family Tragedy

While Alexey was imprisoned, his mother, prominent human rights lawyer Elena Liptser, passed away in early September 2025 after a long illness. She spent decades defending human rights, took part in the Yukos case, and represented Russian citizens before international courts.

Alexey was denied permission to attend her funeral after the court rejected the defense’s request for temporary leave. During this period, his health deteriorated significantly in custody.

His grandfather, renowned human rights defender Lev Ponomaryov, is currently living abroad after facing sustained pressure and persecution in Russia. He was designated a “foreign agent” and forced into exile.

One family has thus been torn apart: a mother deceased, a son imprisoned in poor health, and a grandfather in exile.

On September 22, 2025, Alexey Liptser delivered his final statement during an appeal hearing at the Vladimir Regional Court.
