An interesting situation is now unfolding at the front. No matter how disappointed we may be by the terrible chain of circumstances that favored Vladimir Putin — high oil prices during a significant part of his rule, the West’s hesitation in fulfilling the obligations connected with the Budapest Memorandum — there is one thing that cannot be completely erased.
Political opponents can be slandered through total censorship and then sentenced to enormous prison terms, relying on a fully controlled law enforcement and judicial system. But it is impossible to deceive everyone forever. Propaganda can send people to war, but it cannot hide forever the contrast between what state propaganda promises and what people face in reality.
Especially when people see with their own eyes a system in which human life becomes expendable material, and war itself becomes a source of money and careers for some at the expense of the fate of others.
That is why signals that once seemed impossible are appearing more and more often. One of them was the loud appeal by former reconnaissance squad commander of the Sudoplatov volunteer battalion, Alexander Lunin.
According to Lunin, high-ranking representatives of the Ministry of Defense and security structures approached him and asked him to convey to Vladimir Putin information about what is really happening at the front. He himself demanded a personal meeting with the President and the opportunity to speak next to him live on air.
Otherwise, Lunin made an unprecedented statement:
“If I do not come to the Kremlin in the near future and do not speak live on air next to you, the army will turn its weapons against the Kremlin.”
According to him, the reason for such harsh statements is the situation of the servicemen themselves. He claims that tens, hundreds, thousands of Russian soldiers are sitting in zindans, placed there by their own commanders. There, according to Lunin, servicemen are subjected to torture, violence and humiliation.
He also explained why, according to him, soldiers are sent to such places. This happens not only for refusing to carry out what he called “stupid, suicidal orders,” but also for refusing to pay money to their command. According to Lunin, after such punishments, some servicemen are later declared missing in action.
Another of his statements concerns the atmosphere inside the army. According to Lunin, resentment among servicemen is accumulating to such an extent that further ignoring these problems could lead to an internal armed conflict.
“If the fighters now turn their weapons against the Kremlin, a meat grinder will begin in the country.”
Separately, Lunin addressed those who, in his view, might try to silence him. He stated that any attempt on his life or on the lives of his family members would be perceived as a signal for further action.
At the moment, it is impossible to independently confirm how true Lunin’s claims are about contacts with high-ranking representatives of the Ministry of Defense and security structures. However, the very fact that such appeals are appearing from a person who took part in combat shows the level of tension inside the army, which is being spoken about publicly more and more often.
Considering that Vladimir Putin never backs down, but rather acts like a bad gambler who, after every mistake, only raises the stakes in the hope that the opponent will surrender first, there are essentially only two possible scenarios.
Either society will allow itself to be sent further into new waves of inhumane mobilizations, often without sufficient technical equipment and necessary supplies, or some of those who were given weapons will one day refuse to support a system which, in their view, deceived them, turning it back against it.
History shows that such situations have already happened, namely Prigozhin’s mutiny, to whom they first promised indulgence and then treacherously destroyed him. Therefore, it would be premature to completely exclude the second scenario. One can only hope that if people ever truly decide to take such a step, they will have more humanity than those who gave them orders.
