In Europe and around the world, the instability of existing democratic systems is being discussed – they are threatened by left and right radicals and populists, as well as mass technologies for influencing public consciousness and exporting corruption.
Russia’s aggressive attack on Ukraine showed that the democratic countries did not foresee and failed to stop this aggression, which led to a full-scale war and massive violation of human rights in the center of Europe with a huge number of victims, with an increased risk of escalating into a global conflict with the use of nuclear weapons.
One of the main tasks of the democratic world is to support the development of sustainable democracy in authoritarian countries, both within the framework of international relations, economic and trade relations, and the creation of effective mechanisms for putting pressure on authoritarian regimes.
The successful solution of these strategic problems of a universal scale requires the unification of expert and intellectual efforts, the involvement of successful experience in resolving international conflicts and the development of democracies in various countries, as well as a deep study of the processes and crises that take place in both democratic and authoritarian societies.
To solve these problems, work is underway to establish and open the Andrei Sakharov Institute, one of the first practical goals of which should be to contribute to the early end of the war, reduce the nuclear threat, unite the healthy forces of Russian society and build a stable democracy in Russia.
In the context of Putin’s Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the active use of totalitarian practices in Russian society, the ideas and authority of Andrei Sakharov were again in demand.
