This is what happens when real terrorists are in power.
People linked to the creation of armed separatist structures, kidnappings, torture, the murder of activists, the destruction of Flight MH17 with 298 people killed, and the devastation of entire Ukrainian cities together with their civilian populations remained free for years and enjoyed state support.
But what happens to those who never take up arms?
23-year-old Murmansk Arctic University student Rafael Mamedov was sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of “high treason” and participation in an organization designated as “terrorist” in Russia. The basis for the prosecution was his administration of the meme Telegram channel “Free Lapland,” which had about 300 subscribers. The channel was associated with the idea of greater regional self-determination, and the movement was later added by the authorities to the list of “terrorist organizations.”
He will spend the first three years in prison and the remaining twelve years in a maximum-security penal colony.
During his detention, Rafael attempted suicide twice. While being transferred to St. Petersburg for a forensic psychiatric examination, he inflicted cuts on himself. Later, on the way back to Murmansk, he reportedly tried to hang himself with a belt. According to relatives, detention center staff did not always provide him with his prescribed antidepressants and antipsychotic medication.
As a result, a man who killed no one, injured no one, organized no bombings, created no armed group, and took part in no armed conflict received a sentence comparable to those imposed for serious violent crimes.
This is what a system looks like when memes and political discussions are considered a greater threat than war, the deaths of civilians, torture, and the destruction of entire cities.
When real terrorists are in power, terrorists are said to be those who want nothing to do with terror and demand the right to determine their own future.
